The Resting Place
This past Friday, Fred, Derek and I went to the Resting Place in Harrisburg to set up some computer systems that had been donated to them by eci and Mission Central in Mechanicsburg. The Resting Place is an after-school program that is currently being run by Phyllis Thomas (far right in the last picture below).
It was started by her late sister, Helen Evans, who had a heart for the kids in the inner city. The mission of the Resting Place is “to provide a place where youth will stay engaged and focused and avoid adversities common to the inner city such as substance abuse and gang violence.”
The Resting Place is staffed by a volunteer labor force that helps kids with homework and it provides a safe place for kids to socialize, play games and work on arts and crafts.
Phyllis builds relationships with the kids in the program and often stops by their school to check and see how they are doing. Currently, they are closed because the heating system in the building isn’t operational and they lack the finances needed to get it up and running, so they are waiting for warmer weather to re-open.
The kids enrolled in the program are constantly contacting “Miss Phyllis” to see when they will be able to come back.
If you are interested in helping the Resting Place, they need volunteers to help kids with homework, games and arts and crafts.
This is the third time that eciGroup has donated old computers to this particular non-profit.
They can always use donations of supplies, games and arts and crafts materials or cash donations to get their boiler up and running!
If you would like to help in some way, contact me and I can give you details. The Resting Place is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization, so donations are tax-deductible.
Thanks!
